6 Common Plumbing Woes You Can’t Ignore

Most plumbing problems start out small, probably too small to call in the expertise of a plumber. But a missing rubber washer, a pipe cut too short, or the wrong wrench can mean these simple, quick fixes end up taking all afternoon…and sometimes the whole evening too. No matter how small a plumbing problem might be, you need to take action to make sure it doesn’t get out of hand.

Here’s a list of the most common plumbing problems we encounter on the job:

Running Toilets – This is definitely not a problem you can afford to ignore. A running toilet can be very expensive and can waste as much as 200 gallons of water in a single day, meaning that your water bill will skyrocket. Don’t panic though – there are a few checks you can carry out yourself.

First, check to see if the handle’s getting stuck under the back of the toilet. If everything seems to be alright, the problem may lie with the flapper or kit. If this is the case, replace the defective flapper. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, we suggest you call in the experts.

Dripping Faucets – Every faucet will leak at one point in time due to wear and tear. If there’s usually a small amount of leakage and dripping after you turn the tap off, but if it’s constantly dripping you’ve got a bigger problem. It’s easy to be dismissive about a dripping tap, believing it to be just a minor annoyance and inconvenience. That couldn’t be further from the truth, and a frequent small drip can proportionately increase your water bill.

Lack of hot water – If your water heater is not performing as it used to, it may be due to a build-up of sediment in the water tank. Our experts will drain your water heater to remove any build-up of calcium or other minerals that are preventing the water from heating up.
There may be other reasons your hot water tank is malfunctioning, such as a worn-out heater or defective components of the heater itself. A qualified engineer will be able to tell you whether it is time to replace the system you have in place.

Low Water Pressure- Low and fluctuating water pressure can be a real nuisance, especially when having a shower or trying to run the dishwasher. Low water pressure can be caused by a variety of factors: low water supply, improper pipe installation and rusty pipes are three of the main culprits.

Blockages – A blockage is another common problem and can be a real plumbing nightmare. The blockage could be the result of people flushing down inappropriate materials down the drain or toilet bowl. They could also be caused by deteriorating pipes, intrusive root growth, or rust and buildup of sediment.
